PCI5331
and PCI5332 PCI Personality
card for the 1330/ 1331 PC-CAMAC Interfaces and 3331 PC-VME Interfaces.
The new PCI5332 PCI personality card for Hytec’s popular
1330/1331 PC-CAMAC and 3331 PC-VME interfaces is a universal (5-volt or 3.3
volt) device which is compatible with the latest motherboards which have
only 3.3-volt slots. It replaces the old 5331 card which is a 5-volt only
PCI card complying with rev 2.1 of the PCI specification.
The PCI5331 and 5332 are a dual-purpose PCI personality
cards for Hytec’s popular 1330/1331 PC -CAMAC and 3331 PC-VME interfaces.
They have been designed using the PCI9052 (5331) and PCI9030 (5332)
second-generation PCI-to-legacy bus interface chips from PLX Technology.
These have an easy-to-use local bus which can easily be adapted to an
‘ISA-like’ protocol resulting in minimum circuit conversion work. The
interface devices are fully programmable with four separate slave images,
multiplexed or de-multiplexed target bus and variable local bus-width.
The 5332 hardware interface remains the same as the 5331,
so the only change is the device type number reported to the BIOS.
In both cases, the same PCB is used with different connectors to link to
either the 1330 (34-way cable) or 1331/3331 (50-way cable).
Clearly, since these cards reside on the PCI bus, new software will be
required to drive them. Hytec have produced a driver for Windows XP and
have VI’s for LabView. A LINUX driver is also available, from a user site
(PSI/TRIUMF); contact Hytec for details.
The 5331/5332 cards replace the much older ISA card
simply by re-positioning the registers of the remote CAMAC or VME
controller within the computer’s PCI IO address space.
This is assigned dynamically by the BIOS so a little work is required to
get the base address information from the system which is then used to
address the card. Once this is done the interface works just the same as
the original combination of ISA card and controller Here
is a comparison of the two structures to illustrate the change:
